    An assessment of advanced displays and controls technology applicable to future space transportation systems

    The topic of advanced display and control technology is addressed along with the major objectives of this technology, the current state of the art, major accomplishments, research programs and facilities, future trends, technology issues, space transportation systems applications and projected technology readiness for those applications. The holes that may exist between the technology needs of the transportation systems versus the research that is currently under way are addressed, and cultural changes that might facilitate the incorporation of these advanced technologies into future space transportation systems are recommended. Some of the objectives are to reduce life cycle costs, improve reliability and fault tolerance, use of standards for the incorporation of advancing technology, and reduction of weight, volume and power. Pilot workload can be reduced and the pilot's situational awareness can be improved, which would result in improved flight safety and operating efficiency. This could be accomplished through the use of integrated, electronic pictorial displays, consolidated controls, artificial intelligence, and human centered automation tools.     The Afro-Latino Presence in Late Colonial Spanish San Antonio

    San Antonio is one of the oldest cities in what is currently the state of Texas. For tens of millennia, Natives have inhabited the entirety of the Americas, and also more specifically the area that is now San Antonio because of its fertile soil and rivers; it is this geographic feature that facilitates the thriving of civilizations. As such, the European Spanish settlers and missionaries established their presence in this very area as early as 1718. Since then, the inevitable miscegenation that resulted has molded the identity of what is now San Antonio, Texas, with over 300 years of documented history of various cultures from around the world coming together. However, there is very little scholarly work regarding demographics in San Antonio before Texas entered the Union, before Texas was an independent republic, and before Texas was a state of Mexico–and more specifically, regarding the Afro-Latino population. The University of Texas at San Antonio does have a “San Antonio Black History Collection” in their library, and currently the collection only goes as far back as 1873. However, black heritage in San Antonio goes back much further than post-Civil War history. I propose the argument that independent Afro-Latinos in what is now present-day San Antonio, although small, were present and established in society during late colonial Spanish rule. The significance of studying the Afro-Latino presence in San Antonio during late colonial New Spain manifests in two different forms. The first of which is the focus of this study; it brings into question the flexibility of the Spanish caste system. And the second is that it substantially adds to the history of black heritage in San Antonio. Additionally, both force us to revisit and question the anglicized narrative of American history

    Concealed Campus Carry: Perspectives from administrators, faculty and firearms instructors on generating campus policy

    School shootings have become prominent throughout the Unites States. This is an issue not only in primary schools but also in postsecondary educational institutions. The states of Utah and Colorado passed laws allowing students to carry guns on publicly funded college and university campuses. In 2015, the Texas legislature also proposed a similar campus carry law, which was not passed in 2015. In 2016, when the Texas 84th Legislature made a second attempt, the law was passed. With the passage of this law by the Texas state legislature, a 21-year-old was now allowed to carry a concealed handgun on campus. It was imperative that administrators, leaders, and staff create policies to address the issue of campus carry. No longer could publicly funded colleges and universities in Texas be allowed to live in the inertia of this issue. Committees were formed and stakeholders were selected. But in this venture, it is not known whether firearms instructors or other sources of expert knowledge were included in the policy creation process. Through this research, I explored the idea of publicly funded colleges and universities collaborating with Texas firearms instructors in creating a campus policy for concealed carry. I utilized a qualitative interview design to examine the beliefs and perceptions of individuals involved in creating university policies.     Mejorando las habilidades de comprensión lectura de un texto de ficción usando mapas mentales en una clase de idioma extranjero en el grado décimo

    Many foreign language students face challenges in the classroom when dealing with reading comprehension activities resulting in poor school performance. Therefore, this study aims at helping tenth-grade students in a public school located in Santander to improve their reading comprehension skills on a short fictional text by using mind maps as a learning strategy and also to help students become independent and self-directed learners. A pre-test and a post-test, as well as field notes were used to analyze students' usage of mind maps to demonstrate comprehension of a short fictional text. The results of this study showed that students benefited from the teacher's modeling of the mind maps in order to understand a short text because students were able to add more details to their mind maps after the intervention. Furthermore, the evidence indicated that mind maps benefited a student with learning impairment to improve his vocabulary and reading comprehension skills of a short reading text.Muchos estudiantes de idiomas poseen dificultades cuando realizan actividades de comprensión de lectura, lo que da lugar a resultados escolares deficientes. Por lo tanto, este estudio tiene como objetivo ayudar a los estudiantes del grado décimo en un colegio público ubicado en Santander a mejorar sus habilidades de comprensión de lectura sobre un texto de ficción corto usando mapas mentales como estrategia de aprendizaje y al mismo ayudarles a convertirse en estudiantes independientes y autónomos. Una Pre y Post prueba, así como también las notas de campo fueron usadas para analizar el uso de mapas mentales y de esta manera demostrar comprensión de un texto corto de ficción. Los resultados de este estudio indican que los estudiantes se beneficiaron de la modelación de los mapas mentales por parte del profesor ya que los estudiantes lograron entender el texto y añadir más información a sus mapas mentales después de la intervención. Adicionalmente, la evidencia indica que los mapas mentales beneficiaron a un estudiante con dificultades de aprendizaje a mejorar su vocabulario y sus habilidades de comprensión de lectura de un texto corto

    Tesis realizada para obtener el grado de Doctora en Ciencias del AguaConservar el agua limpia, garantiza disponer de buenos ecosistemas aptos para la flora, fauna y los seres humanos, además de que, el agua dulce continental es la principal fuente de suministro de agua potable, de ahí la importancia de proteger este recurso de la contaminación. Los plaguicidas son compuestos empleados para controlar, disminuir o eliminar plagas que atacan los cultivos. Su adecuada utilización contribuye a elevar la producción de origen agrícola. Sin embargo, dada su constitución, al ser aplicados constantemente en la agricultura generan residuos que contaminan suelo, cuerpos de agua, aire y biota, afectando las cadenas tróficas y como consecuencia a la salud humana. El destino ambiental de los plaguicidas depende en gran parte de sus propiedades fisicoquímicas, así como de las condiciones ambientales del lugar de donde se aplican, que al final son los dos factores primordiales que determinan su grado de retención, degradación o movilidad a través del suelo, que tan soluble es en el agua y volátil para ser transportado por el aire. La contaminación por plaguicidas ocurre por una serie de procesos complejos de transporte, volatilización, precipitación pluvial, escurrimientos, lixiviaciones y retenciones, los cuales se ven influenciados por múltiples factores de tipo: climático, geomorfológico, edafológico y antropogénico. Por ejemplo, el parámetro de vida media de un plaguicida puede ser una medida útil de cuánto tiempo puede permanecer en el medio aplicado, sin embargo, estudios realizados han encontrado una amplia variedad de valores de vidas medias para el mismo plaguicida bajo diferentes condiciones ambientales. Por otro lado, el creciente desarrollo en años recientes de los softwares en Sistemas de Información Geográfica (SIG) y su uso frecuente para el procesamiento de información espacial y temporal en las diferentes disciplinas de la investigación, hacen atractiva su aplicación. El trabajo de investigación realizado tuvo como objetivo hacer un balance de plaguicidas por capas en el perfil de la zona edáfica (ZE) del suelo de un invernadero de cultivo de flor de forma espacial y temporal utilizando el software de SIG TerrSet aplicando modelos matemáticos, cuyas variables fueron obtenidas en campo, laboratorio y de bibliografía, para estimar el destino ambiental de los plaguicidas aplicados durante las actividades agrícolas a nivel de invernadero.     L'hypothèse centrale qui sous-tend notre recherche est celle d'une permanence des tendances lourdes à la métropolisation et à la ségrégation des populations et des activités, notamment par l'émergence de polarités périphériques situées sur les axes principaux de transport. Les différents travaux effectués sur le Costa-Rica, la France et le Mexique nous ont conduit de fait à insister beaucoup plus sur la dimension de la ségrégation dans les évolutions à l'œuvre.     父母参与及学业成就:探索两者在高中生身上的关系

    The aim of the present study was to determine the relationship between parental involvement (communication, motivation and reading promotion) and educational achievement in baccalaureate students. A quantitative, cross-sectional, non-experimental and correlational study was conducted with 13,478 parents or legal guardians and students undertaking the educational stage under study in Mexico in 2018. A questionnaire was administered to parents or legal guardians, in which they provided information about their children. The questionnaire included items to measure factors pertaining to communication, motivation and reading promotion. The validity and internal consistency of each factor was established using exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses, according to the resulting Cronbach’s alpha (a) and McDonald’s omega () coefficients, respectively. Educational achievement was determined according to student reading, mathematics and science outcomes in PISA 2018. In order to empirically verify the proposed theoretical model, a structural equation modelling approach was taken and, from this, the empirical model was obtained. Based on the above, educational achievement was found to be directly related with communication and reading promotion. Likewise, an indirect relationship was obtained between motivation and educational achievement. The relationship between the factors examined in the present study and educational achievement is not sufficiently considered in in baccalaureate students. It is, therefore, important to recognise family as a valuable entity with a meaningful impact in the school environment.El objetivo del presente trabajo fue determinar la relación existente entre el Involucramiento parental (Comunicación, Motivación y Fomento lector) y el Logro educativo en estudiantes de bachillerato. Fue un estudio cuantitativo, transversal, no experimental y correlacional que estuvo conformado por 13,478 madres, padres y/o tutores y estudiantes que cursaban el nivel educativo en mención en México en el año 2018. Fue aplicado un cuestionario para madres, padres y/o tutores, en el cual, brindaban información acerca de sus hijas e hijos. De este cuestionario fueron seleccionadas preguntas para medir los factores de Comunicación, Motivación y Fomento lector, determinando validez y consistencia interna de cada factor a través de los análisis factoriales exploratorio y confirmatorio y los coeficientes alfa (a) de Cronbach y omega () de McDonald, respectivamente. El logro educativo se midió a través de los resultados del estudiantado en lectura, matemáticas y ciencias en PISA 2018. Para comprobar empíricamente el modelo teórico propuesto, se aplicó el modelaje con ecuaciones estructurales. Una vez que se aplicó dicho modelaje se obtuvo el modelo empírico. Con base en lo anterior, se encontró una relación directa entre la Comunicación y el Fomento lector con el Logro educativo, asimismo, se obtuvo una relación indirecta entre la Motivación y el propio Logro educativo. Por consiguiente, se da por sentada la relación entre los factores analizados y el Logro educativo en estudiantes de bachillerato, de ahí la importancia de reconocer a la familia como un ente valioso que tiene impacto en el ámbito escolar.O objetivo deste estudo foi determinar a relação entre o Envolvimento dos Pais (Comunicação, Motivação e Incentivo à Leitura) e a Realização Educativa nos alunos do ensino secundário. Foi aplicado um questionário a mães, pais e/ou tutores, no qual estes forneciam informações sobre os seus filhos.     Determinación de la calidad de agua mediante la comunidad de macroinvertebrados como bioindicadores de 3 afluentes principales en el río Guachicos municipio de Pitalito Huila.

    El río Guachicos es la fuente de abastecimiento del acueducto de Pitalito, municipio con 100.000 habitantes. El río hace su recorrido por veredas del corregimiento de Bruselas y en sus orillas se encuentran asentamientos humanos y cultivos de café, que vierten sus aguas servidas directamente a la corriente. La empresa de servicios públicos de Pitalito realiza monitoreo solamente al punto de colecta de agua para el acueducto, sin hacer el monitoreo de la fuente principal ni de sus afluentes y el municipio de Pitalito no presta un apoyo efectivo para que los habitantes de las riveras implementen sistemas de descontaminación de agua que les permitan minimizar la contaminación por vertimientos. En este contexto, desde principios del año 2018 se han venido desarrollando investigaciones para hacer monitoreo de macroinvertebrados, por lo que la presente investigación se hizo en los meses de mayo a noviembre del 2018 en las quebradas La Maralla, El Caney y Aguas Negras, para determinar la calidad de agua de los afluentes usando el método BMWP/Col de Roldán, colectando según la metodología de Roldan 1988. Se identificaron 11 órdenes con un total de 2096 especímenes, dentro de los cuales se encuentran Trichoptera con un porcentaje de 53,6%, Odonata con 15,5%, Basommatophora con 9,7%, Hemiptera con 6,5%, Coleoptera con un 5,6% y Diptera con una 4,2%. La familia más abundante fue la Helicopsychidae con un 28,5%, la Hydropsychidae con 24,9%, la Lymnaeidae con 9,6% al igual que la Libellulidae. Los valores del índice BMWP/Col fueron de los valores de BMWP/Col, indican aguas moderadamente contaminadas en las quebradas Aguas Negras y Caney y muy contaminadas en La Maralla, mostrando el deterioro de la calidad del agua a medida que se presentan vertimientos por asentamientos y cultivos. Se evidencia la necesidad de hacer monitoreos constantes a la calidad de agua y que se implementen programas de mejoramiento de las condiciones ambientales de las quebradas, sanciones y correctivos a los responsables de la contaminación.The Guachicos River is the source of supply for the Pitalito aqueduct, a municipality with 100,000 inhabitants. The river travels along the paths of the district of Brussels and on its banks are human settlements and coffee crops, which pour their sewage directly into the stream. The public utility company of Pitalito, performs monitoring only at the point of water collection for the aqueduct, without monitoring the main source or its tributaries and the municipality of Pitalito does not provide effective support so that the inhabitants of the riversides implement water decontamination systems that allow them to minimize pollution by dumping. In this context, since the beginning of the year 2018, research has been carried out to monitor macroinvertebrates, so this research was carried out in the months of May to November 2018 in the La Maralla, El Caney and Aguas Negras streams, to determine the water quality of the tributaries using the BMWP / Col method of Roldán, collecting according to the 2016 IDEAM methodology. Eleven orders were identified with a total of 2096 specimens, including Trichoptera with a percentage of 53.6%, Odonata with 15.5%, Basommatophora with 9.7%, Hemiptera with 6.5%, Coleoptera with 5.6% and Diptera with 4.2%. The most abundant family was the Helicopsychidae with 28.5%, the Hydrosychidae with 24.9%, the Lymnaeidae with 9.6% as well as the Libellulidae. The BMWP / Col index values were BMWP / Col values, indicate moderately polluted waters in the Aguas Negras and Caney streams and heavily polluted in La Maralla, showing the deterioration of water quality as settlements occur and crops.
